Reaching Out to the Horizon
Situated on a remote coastal site, the island residence is conceived as a high-performance instrument for viewing the horizon. The architectural parti is defined by a rhythmic "fanning" of the plan—four distinct orientations that radiate toward the sea to frame curated panoramas. By breaking the residential program into these discrete fingers, the design ensures that each living and sleeping zone maintains an intimate, unobstructed connection to the Caribbean landscape.

Site Plan
Existing Site

The site plan is organized as a rational, radiating parti that navigates the intersection of two distinct approaches from the north and west.

By fanning the building’s mass into four discrete "fingers," the design optimizes the building's footprint to capture 180 degrees of panoramic exposure while maintaining privacy between the private and communal wings. This strategic orientation prioritizes cross-ventilation and creates a series of protected interstitial spaces, transforming the remote landscape into a choreographed sequence of arrival, compression, and eventual revelation.

South and West Elevations

The building’s elevation emphasizes a light touch on the remote site. The roof planes are designed to provide deep shading for the glazed facades, ensuring that the interior remains luminous and cool.

From Opaque Entry to Immersive Spectacle
The approach to the residence is a study in architectural restraint. From the north and west, the house presents a series of largely opaque volumes, punctuated only by selective openings. Guests enter through narrow interstitial slots between the volumes—a spatial compression that builds anticipation. As one moves toward the interior "knuckle" of the plan, the architecture begins to dissolve, hinting at the horizon without fully revealing it.

At the center of the four volumes lies the kitchen and dining area—the social "hearth" and tectonic anchor of the home. This central gathering space acts as the pivot point for the entire project, linking the private sleeping quarters to the expansive communal zones. From this vantage point, the architectural sequence culminates in a dramatic revelation: the opaque walls give way to a continuous wraparound deck and a panoramic view of the Atlantic, unveiled all at once as a singular, immersive experience.
